We purchased this beautiful 60 acre farm in Geauga County, Ohio in 2013 with the goal of being
able to live a more sustainable life & to be able to share our love of great food raised as humanely
as possible without the added use of antibiotics, hormones or genetically modified feed. It's something
we personally feel strongly about & it seems there are many others who feel the same.
It is a business, but we are just as passionate about being stewards of this land, so we strive to keep
a happy balance. The quality of our product is extremely important to us & so our philosophy is
to work with the seasons of the year. For example, we won't have fresh chicken available November through April because the weather generally is too cold & wet, the pastures don't grow much & the chickens don't thrive/are not happy outside in the move-able, bottomless tractors. Our calves, piglets & lambs are generally born in Spring/ Summer so that they can get a good start in life
basking in warmth from the sun & eating fresh pasture.
You will see browsing through our website that many of the animal breeds we have chosen are on
The Livestock Conservancy's Preservation List, an organization which seeks to help promote & save
heritage breeds. They are superior tasting & have lots of other great traits but they are not
'viable' options from a 'large' commercial perspective - for example they take longer to get to table
size, they do better on pasture than when fed grain in a feedlot. However for us & for what our goals
are they are worth the extra wait - better taste & mounting evidence that pasture raised livestock without the addition of antibiotics & genetically modified feeds as being a much healthier alternative both for the animals and for us.
In keeping with our belief that these old breeds; animal, fruit and vegetable taste much better, we
have over the last few years added many old American & European varieties of mostly heirloom
fruit & nut trees - apple, cherry, mulberry, plum, peach, pear, persimmon, pawpaw, walnut,
butternut and hazelnut. We have also added a 5 types of edible Elderberry, 6 varieties of
strawberries including a rare heirloom from Denmark called "Old North Sea'. 22 blueberry bushes
and 10 types of raspberries. We hope to offer some of the organically grown harvest from these trees & bushes in 2020.
We will also be offering many vegetables in 2020, all heirloom (except one hybrid, a cherry tomato "Sungold" which I always grow because it tastes great!), grown organically here on the farm in our great, nutrient rich, mostly no till soil. Hopefully we will get an earlier start on the season next year with the addition of a 30 x 75 hoophouse in late October of this year.
We'd like you to visit our farm so you can get to know us & what we are about. We will answer
all your questions about what we do & why we do it. We really do grow great food & it's not at
the expense of the animal's well being; in fact you will see that our animals live happy lives &
are allowed to exhibit all the natural traits & behaviors of their species.
